Panic disorder is simultaneously widespread and below the radar. Klonopin is one of the most promising medications from the perspective of efficient treatment of panic disorders. How Does It Work

Klonopin is an oral prescription drug. Its main active ingredient is clonazepam — this substance increases the inhibiting effect of the GABA neurotransmitter. In simpler terms, it provides a general calming effect on the nervous system. Seizures occur when our brain sends extremely rapid and repetitive signals through the nervous system. The drug enhances the inhibiting effect of the principal neurotransmitter of the human body, reducing over-stimulation and excessive neuronal activity. However, Klonopin must not be treated as a mere relaxant. It is a very powerful medication with long-lasting effects. Do not take it without your pharmacist’s prescription. In addition, do not stop taking it without notifying your therapist — rapid discontinuation of treatment may cause life-threatening withdrawal symptoms.

Doses and Precautions

Klonopin comes in tablets that should be swallowed without chewing. The initial dose for adult patients suffering from seizures must not exceed 1.5 mg/day (divided into three intakes). Patients with panic disorder usually start with the initial dose of 0.25 mg twice daily. The usual target dose is 1 mg/day, which can be achieved after at least three days of treatment. Elderly patients usually start with lower doses. Your therapist should make all decisions about the initial dose and dose corrections, including discontinuation of the treatment or increase of maintenance doses.
